چکیده
The link between the African Monsoon systems and aerosol loading in Africa is studied using multi-year satellite observations of UV-absorbing aerosols and rain gauge measurements. The main aerosol types occurring over Africa are desert dust and biomass burning aerosols, which are UV-absorbing. The abundance of these aerosols over Africa is characterised in this paper using residues and Absorbing Aerosol Index (AAI) data from Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME) on board ERS-2 and SCanning Imaging Absorption SpectroMeter for Atmospheric ChartograpHY (SCIAMACHY) on

Satellite and Gpcp Data Show Co-variability of Aerosols and Precipitation over the Indian Monsoon Region
The time-latitude cross section of climatological daily variations of Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer–Aerosol Index (TOMS-AI) (upper panel) and the GEWEX Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) 5-day mean rainfall (lower panel) over the Indian subcontinent show that the high aerosol region in Northern India during June–July overlaps with the rain area, indicating that aerosols may inte...
متن کاملInvestigation of the atmospheric circulation anomalies associated with extreme rainfall events over the Coastal West Africa
This study investigates the atmospheric circulation associated with extreme rainfall events over the coastal West Africa. The rainfall data of this study were obtained from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC), spanning from 1981 to 2010. The atmospheric datasets were also obtained from the ERA-Interim reanalysis. The study employed the Z-Index to categorize dry and wet years into...
متن کاملConsistent response of Indian summer monsoon to Middle East dust in observations and simulations
The response of the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) circulation and precipitation to Middle East dust aerosols on sub-seasonal timescales is studied using observations and the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with online chemistry (WRF-Chem). Satellite data show that the ISM rainfall in coastal southwest India, central and northern India, and Pakistan is closely associated with the Mi...
متن کاملTHE JOINT AEROSOL– MONSOON EXPERIMENT A New Challenge for Monsoon Climate Research
Understanding the physical processes responsible for aerosol– monsoon water cycle interactions is fundamental to improving prediction and enhancing vigilance of climatic hazards in the Asian monsoon region. A ir pollution and monsoon floods and droughts are two of the most serious environmental threats to over 60% of the world population living in Asia. The increasing aerosol loading in Asian c...
متن کاملUsing MODIS data for nonlinear hazard analysis of the Middle East aerosols
Aerosols are among the most important of atmospheric pollutants observed like the microscopic particulate matter in the lower parts of the troposphere. The main purpose of this study is introducing a new method based on satellite images processing results and nonlinear analysis (fractal based) to investigate the origin and dynamical mechanism of aerosols distribution in North Africa and the Mid...
